The Persian Shield (Strobilanthes auriculata var. dyeriana) is misnamed on both counts: it hails from tropical Asia, not Persia, and no shield ever shimmered like this. The purple iridescence isn't pigment alone — light refracts within the leaf's surface layers, so the colour shifts silver-violet as you move around it, strongest on fresh growth in good light. It's non-toxic to cats and dogs, and honesty compels us to say it's one of the thirstier plants we sell: it likes moisture, humidity and will wilt promptly to remind you.
