Genus Information

Strelitzia is a genus of five species of plants native to South Africa. They are commonly referred to as Bird of Paradise due to their flowers similarity to the birds with elaborate plumage. Some species flower more easily indoors than others with Strelitzia reginae being the easiest to make flower whereas it is very difficult to get Strelitzia nicolai to flower indoors and are instead kept for their large attractive foliage.

Light requirements

Strelitzia nicolai prefers bright indirect light. It can cope with a small amount of direct light in the early morning or late evening.

Watering requirements

The Bird of Paradise prefers a moist environment, so try keep the soil damp but not wet at all times.

Humidity requirements

Strelitzia nicolai prefers an area with high humidity. Mist occasionally to keep the leaves looking nice and fresh.


Growth

Can reach heights of up to 3 metres and is a fast grower. It will however be restricted by the size of pot it is in.

Origin

Originally native to Southern Africa.

Flowering

Although other Strelitzia are kept for their distinctive flowers, it is extremely difficult to get a strelitzia nicolai to flower indoors.

Foliage

Strelitzia nicolai has impressive large leaves that are perfect for bringing a tropical feel to your home. This is where it's other name of Wild Banana comes as the foliage is reminiscent of a banana plant, despite it having no relation.
