Description
Mahonia 'Winter Sun' is known for its attractive foliage, yellow flowers and blue-black berries. It is an evergreen shrub that can reach up to 6-8 feet tall and wide, it has a compact, upright growth habit. The leaves are typically green, but some cultivars have dark purple or bronze leaves, in the case of 'Winter Sun' the foliage is an attractive blue-green color. It produces spikes of bright yellow, fragrant flowers in winter, that are loved by bees and other pollinators. The flowers are followed by clusters of blue-black berries in the late winter and early spring. This plant also has a good resistance to deer and pests, making it a good option for planting in areas where these are a problem. It is adaptable to a range of soil types and prefers a position in partial shade to full sun. Mahonia x media 'Winter Sun' is suitable for planting in the garden as specimen or foundation planting, or as a hedge or screen. It can also be grown in containers and it is tolerant of heavy pruning.
