Description

Arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’ is a small evergreen tree or shrub that is prized for its attractive, year-round foliage and ornamental fruit. This cultivar is also known as the compact strawberry tree. The plant produces glossy, dark green leaves that are oval-shaped and leathery. In the fall and winter, it produces clusters of small, bell-shaped, creamy-white flowers that are followed by red, strawberry-like fruit that persists on the tree through the winter months. The fruit is edible but not particularly flavorful. ‘Compacta’ is an excellent choice for adding interest to a small garden or patio. It can also be used as a low hedge or border plant. The plant is low-maintenance, easy to grow, and relatively pest and disease-resistant. It can be propagated by seed or softwood cuttings.
