Description
Liatris spicata, also known as blazing star or gayfeather, is a perennial plant that produces tall, slender spikes of fluffy purple or white flowers from mid to late summer. The flowers bloom from the top of the spike downward and attract butterflies and bees to the garden. The plant has grass-like foliage and can reach up to 3 feet tall, making it a great choice for the back of a border or as a statement plant. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Liatris spicata pairs well with other summer-blooming perennials such as echinacea, rudbeckia, and salvia. It also makes a great cut flower for arrangements.
